10 Best Non-Arty things to do in Cheongju S Korea

Last updated 1/10/2026

In another article, we suggest going to Cheongju South Korea for the Cheongju Craft Biennale (in odd-numbered years).

But here are 10 non-museum-or-gallery things to do in Cheongju, South Korea — mixing nature, food, local life and scenic spots, as compiled on request by ChatGPT (we didn’t really visit all of these places, but you might want to!)

We note that it included credit links to supplying site, and made the error of including clearly-Seoul-not-Cheongju options/photos, which we’ve removed.

1. Yukgeori Market

One of Cheongju’s major traditional markets: approx. 1,200+ stores, 50,000–60,000 visitors daily.

Why go: Great for street food, local produce, authentic market atmosphere.
Tip: Visit early morning for the “dawn market” vibe when farmers bring fresh produce. Wikipedia

2. Suamgol Mural Village (and the adjoining café street)

Why go: Colourful murals, great city-views from cafés, relaxed afternoon.
Tip: Some uphill walking involved — comfortable shoes help for the terraces.

3. Sangdangsanseong Fortress (산당산성)

Why go: Nature + history blend; good viewpoint for the city.
Tip: Go during late afternoon for golden light and cooler temperatures.

4. Uamsan Mountain (우암산)

A convenient mountain near the city for walking trails and views.

Note: we actually DID do at least part of this hike, walking from downtown Cheongju to the National Museum. Strenuous in spots, with a couple markers of ancient fortress walls that *used* to be there. Not much to see really, but a nice city break. Oh – and there’s workout equipment at the top!
Why go: Easy nature escape from the city; good for a hike and views.
Tip: For cherry blossoms in spring, this is a recommended spot.

5. Musimcheon Stream walking path

Note: this submission also came with photos of a canal walk from *Seoul*, clearly not Cheongju… where this is, I couldn’t begin to say – we never saw it!
Why go: Leisurely stroll or cycle through pleasant surroundings; especially nice in spring.
Tip: Go around the Seomun Market to Namseokgyo Bridge stretch for charming ambience.

6. Ochang Lake Park (오창호수공원)

Note: We also walked by this lake/park on our way back from the National Museum. The restaurants at the one end are all pretty overpriced – you’re paying for a nice view.
Why go: Escape the hustle, enjoy the lake view and green space.
Tip: Bring a picnic or pick a café by the water.

7. Cheongnamdae Presidential Villa

10. Food & café culture-hop (local eats + café terraces)

Not sure where these views are from, either. Certainly nothing we experienced (and GPT didn’t give a source). BUT.. we can say food in Cheongju can be awesome, if you’re adventurous and go where the locals go. There are a couple “eating streets” up by the Cheongju Industrial Complex, where the Craft Biennale is held where you’ll find excellent Korean barbeque.

And we did have the best fried chicken in *years* from a “ghost kitchen” that also sells direct.

Not cheap, think our box (basically a whole chicken with sauces and pickled radish side) was like $15usd, but delicious, and still a decent value (lasted us 3 meals).
